Olam Spices – 31 + years
Olam International is a large agribusiness company with locations around the world. Our division grows and dehydrates millions of pounds of onions, garlic and paprika and markets these products to food suppliers domestically and in the international market.
Primary work responsibilities:
- Virus elimination and micropropagation of selected garlic clones, together with increases of the virus free (no virus detected) plant material in isolation at our Research Farm or in Northern California or Oregon growing areas before being planted for production.
- Development of disease resistant paprika varieties.
Prior to working for Olam, I was employed for five and 2/3’s years by SunSeeds/Agrigenetics in Hollister, CA.
Dr. Sylvia Mitchell has shared her knowledge in a variety of media. She published a commentary that was included in the Jamaica Gleaner regarding why people should be wearing masks during the pandemic. Her article regarding medicinal plants was published in the Jamaica Observer entitled “Stop bashing the bush” and she was highlighted in a recent YouTube documentary entitled “History of Roots Tonic : Jamaica’s Cure All Drink | Documentary.” She provided an interview called ‘virtual Edible Talk with Dr Sylvia Mitchell’ which is available at https://www.facebook.com/GreenMarketSantaCruz/ and recently published the following book chapter which is available online:

Dr. Leonard Hayflick (Professor of Anatomy, University of California, San Francisco) has been selected as a recipient of the 2020 Perelman School of Medicine Distinguished Graduate Award. This award from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania honors alumni for their outstanding service to society and to the profession of medicine as well as their accomplishments in biomedical research, clinical practice or medical education. Dr. Hayflick is being is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to the National Institute on Aging and the Gerontological Society of America, and outstanding research accomplishments in the fields of microbiology and aging. The formal award presentation will take place in November of 2020.
