Research for Conservation.  Do you have a student working on developing an in vitro propagation protocol for a wild species or a protocol for cryopreserving shoot tips or somatic embryos of a wild species?  If so, they may be eligible to apply for the Exceptional Plant Research Award.  Never heard of an exceptional plant?  Exceptional plants are species with seeds or spores that don’t work well in traditional seed banking.  They may be sensitive to the drying or freezing needed for seed banking (such as oaks, cycads, many dipterocarps) or there may not be many seeds (many rare species), or the seeds may be short-lived in storage and will require cryopreservation for long term conservation (many orchids, ferns, palms, and other tropical species).  In vitro and cryopreservation methods are critical for the long-term preservation of endangered exceptional species, and student research can make a significant contribution to their conservation.  Working with a common species that is related to a rare species can help develop needed protocols.  If you have questions about which species will qualify, contact Valerie Pence, valerie.pence@cincinnatizoo.org.  For more information or to apply for the student award, go to the SIVB Student Award Programs listed under Student Opportunities on the SIVB website.  Applications are due by January 31, 2019.

On November 30th, Chenielle Delahaye-McKenzie, successfully presented and defended her dissertation research project titled “Analysis of antibacterial and antifungal components in tissue culture and wild extracts of Callistemon viminalis growing in Jamaica.”  Her dissertation advisor is Dr. Sylvia Adjoa Mitchell (Senior Lecturer, Medicinal Plant Research Group, The Biotechnology Center, University of West Indies-Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica), and Dr. Michael E. Kane (Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Professor, University of Florida-Gainesville) served as an external examiner.  Read the announcement.

Jeff Kwak, IVACS section student member, has earned his PhD degree in Cancer Biology from the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.  The title of his dissertation is “Targeting Complement Pathway in Lung Cancer Progression”.  Jeff has started a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. McGarry Houghton at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle, WA).
