LEGISLATIVE ALERT ON NIH FUNDING--URGE
YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO SIGN ON 'DEAR
COLLEAGUE' LETTER
Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA), Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Diane
Feinstein (D-CA) will be offering an amendment to the NIH
bill to increase its funding by $1.5 billion, bringing total
NIH funding increases to $2.5 billion in FY 2004. This increase
will create funding discrepancies between the House and
Senate Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations bills.
Such differences mean that House and Senate leaders must
meet in conference to resolve the discrepancies.
A 'Dear Colleague' letter is being circulated by Reps.
Lois Capps (D-CA),
Chris Bell (D-TX), Mark Foley (R-FL) and Jim Leach (R-IA),
to urge the
conferees to support a 8-10 percent increase in the FY 2004
budget, when
they meet to iron out differences. Please contact your Representative
today
to ask them to sign on to the 'Dear Colleague' letter, in
support of 8-10
percent increases for NIH in FY 2004. This effort is extremely
important,
as grants and future funding for science at NIH are in danger!
