News from the IVACS
Section
Another year is rapidly coming to a close. I believe we are all probably looking toward a new year full of opportunity and hope. Fortunately, our Society and IVACS has weathered the economic storm in reasonably good financial shape. I know I had to make a lot of tough choices this past year with respect to our Section’s funding of travel-expenses for our invited speakers, and I thank everyone for their support on this; but I believe we had a great program in Charleston, thanks to our convener’s creativity and perseverance. Although we are still struggling with membership as our numbers continue to dwindle, I hold out hope that this will turn around with the economy. Our meeting attendance has stabilized the past 3 or so years and that has been wonderful. Our selection of a quality host cities and meeting venues for the annual meeting and their proximity to strong academic and industrial bases have been keys to that success. I believe we will be again successful in St Louis. Although on the surface the joint meeting with IAPB looks pretty ”Green”, Dr. Cindy Goodman and the program committee have forged another quality animal program with plenty of “Meat” for everyone. Please plan to attend and support the Section’s program and social activities.
Soon, along with your membership renewal, you will be receiving a ballot for the current slate of candidates both on the Society and IVACS Section level. Please exercise your right to vote for the candidates of your choice. These folks pledge to represent you as we move forward and it will be critical to have energetic leadership as we move into the next decade. In addition, if you haven’t been too involved recently or you are a new member, student or regular, step up and volunteer on committees, as conveners, or in any other capacity where you feel comfortable. The more you are involved the more rewarding the meeting becomes. It is a great opportunity for career networking and making lifelong friends.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone that it is time to start pulling together the documentation for submission for SIVB awards. It is your chance to recognize colleagues or mentors who have made significant contributions to their field of science and/or the Society for In Vitro Sciences. These include: Lifetime Achievement Award; Fellow Award; and Young Scientist Award. The criteria for each of these awards can be found on the SIVB website at this address: http://www.sivb.org/mem_a_recipients.asp#s. If you need further assistance you may contact the chair of the awards committee Dr. Maud A. Hinchee at mahinch@arborgen.com, or me at dalpsu@lilly.com. The documentation must be complete as described in each award criteria, so get digging and start writing so we can formally recognize their accomplishments.
Regards to all my IVACS colleagues,
Dennis Laska
