STUDENT AWARD PROGRAMS

Young Scientist Award
David Jayme (chair, In Vitro Animal Cell Sciences section) and Wayne Parrott (chair, Plant Biotech section) are pleased to announce the Young Scientist Award. This award was reformulated and redefined with close collaboration between the two sections, and targets an important career stage for SIVB members. The award has stringent criteria, and will be awarded judiciously so as to maintain its prestige and importance. Each SIVB section may give up to one Young Scientist Award per year-- assuming that qualified candidates apply!

Therefore, we are soliciting applications for the Young Scientist Award. A description of the criteria for the award and of the application procedures may be found on the SIVB web site at http://www.sivb.org/awards_student_YoungScientist.asp.

Plant Biotechnology Section Graduate Student Poster Competition
The Plant Biotechnology section is pleased to announce the initial reinstatement phase of the graduate student competitions. Professional societies such as SIVB should provide a vehicle to foster and enhance the professional development and careers of its members, including graduate students.

This year, we will begin with the posters. The intention is to expand to oral presentations in 2008. Students wishing to enter the poster competition should submit a copy of their title, abstract (as submitted to SIVB) to Dr. Fredy Altpeter no later than 1 April 2007. Only those abstracts formally submitted to SIVB can be considered.

Posters will be judged by a panel of judges on scientific merit (experimental design, data analysis, proper interpretation of the results, originality and creativity) and on presentation (appearance of poster and ability of the student to explain it). Judging will be done throughout the day on Monday June 11th. Winners will be presented a certificate and a cash award at the Plant Section business meeting on the evening of Monday June 11th.

White Training Award seeks Applicants
The Philip White Memorial Award is a study award made in honor of Dr. Philip R. White, an eminent pioneer, teacher and researcher in plant cell and tissue culture techniques. The fund is to be used to supplement expenses for a student to further study plant tissue culture by acquiring specialized training in a plant-tissue-culture related technique not available at his/her home institution, by traveling to another laboratory. A stipend of up to $650 is awarded yearly for travel to, and training at, an institution of the awardee's choice. It should not be used to supplement living expenses at a home institution. The award can be used to supplement other awards or scholarships, provided such other awards are not total payment for training. It must be used for direct training in a technique that involves plant tissue culture.

Applicants for the award must substantiate that the training will extend their ability to perform research and/or development in a field which requires plant tissue culture. Applicants must be able to demonstrate interest and scholastic achievement. Please note that this is not restricted to U.S. residents. Applicants need to provide via email:

  • A statement of objectives and past training
  • Type of training they will receive and where
  • A letter from the volunteer trainer indicating that they will agree to train the person in specific tissue culture techniques at a specific site and a specific time period
  • A list of funds needed for travel to the training site (airfare, hotels, meals, etc.)
  • Letters of recommendation from two sources who are familiar with the applicants prior training and can substantiate that the applicant is a student

All materials should be emailed or faxed to the chairman of the Philip White Committee by April 1. The current chairman is Carol Stiff, kck@turbonet.com. Current members of the committee are: Jeff Adelberg, Esther Uchendu, Sylvia Mitchell and Ray Shillito. Recipients of the award will be notified prior to the SIVB annual meeting in June.

International Foundation for Ethical Research Alternatives in Scientific Research

The International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) is pleased to announce the availability of Graduate Fellowships in Alternatives In Scientific Research. IFER is dedicated to the development and implementation of scientifically valid alternatives to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education. IFER is also committed to programs designed to increase public awareness of such alternatives. The purpose of these Graduate Fellowships in Alternatives in Scientific Research is to provide monetary assistance to graduate students whose programs of study seem likely to have an impact in one or more of these areas.

Awards
The fellowships will provide up to $12,500 annually in stipendiary support and up to$2,500 for supplies per year. The fellowships are renewable annually for up to 3 years. Continued funding is dependent on student progress and AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS.

Expectations
In return for funding, IFER expects:

  • annual progress reports,
  • acknowledgment of support in publications and formal presentations,
  • copies of all publications,
  • a copy of the thesis or dissertation including a special section detailing the relevance of the work to IFER's goals and replacement, reduction, refinement and responsibility (the 4 R's) as they relate to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education.

In addition, the student's graduate advisory committee must (as possible) contain one member with particular interest or expertise in animal welfare.

Eligibility
Application is open to students enrolled in Master's and Ph.D. programs in the sciences, humanities, psychology, and journalism.

Sample Areas of Interest

IFER has supported research in the following areas. However, this list is not intended to be exhaustive.

  • Tissue, cell, and organ cultures
  • Clinical studies using animals or humans
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Enhanced use of existing tissue repositories and patient databases
  • Public education
  • Computer modeling

Application
Application Deadline March 15 of each Year.
