EDUCATION COMMITTEE

In a few short months we will all be gathering in Indianapolis for the SIVB annual meeting. This year the Education Committee has joined in collaboration with the Indiana Department of Education and Todd Murphy's Biotechnology program at Ivy Tech to sponsor an intensive, multifaceted workshop for Indiana high school teachers. The program, to be held in the labs at Ivy Tech, will begin with 2 full days on molecular biology techniques that utilize cultured plant tissue and invertebrates. Mike Kane, Bernadette Plair and Pat Bossert, in conjunction with additional members of Todd Murphy's team, will run these sessions. On Sunday at the SIVB, meeting Todd and I will convene a lunch session "The Academic Industry Partnership: Training Students to Fill a Need" for both the teachers and SIVB members. Throughout the following week the teachers will spend a half day at the Ivy Tech labs, working on their bench skills, and a half day at our meeting, attending sessions and posters. I would like to encourage all of you who attend the meeting to welcome them warmly when you see them.

Indianapolis will also be the site of the first meeting for SIVB's new ad hoc Student Committee. For several years now, SIVB's student members have been developing a stronger sense of identity and a need for a cohesive voice. This year for the first time they will have an opportunity to gather as a group and discuss what directions they would like to go in. Immediately prior to this meeting on Sunday evening, Scott Stewart and Randy Santiano will be co-convening a session on mentoring for all SIVB members. In addition, with the unanimous support of the SIVB Board of Directors, work has already been started by Randy and Scott on a new formal mentoring initiative. In addition, Annie McGill and Carol Stiff are working to revitalize the SIVB students Yahoo Listserv. We should all pay close attention to these developments and participate where ever we can.
