Biosensors are analytical devices incorporating a biological material associated with a physicochemical
transducer to produce a digital signal indicating the presence of a specific analyte or related group of
analytes. Biosensors have found utility in medical, pharmaceutical, environmental and food safety
research. More recently, they have had a significant impact in chemical-biological defense research. This
Plenary session will describe efforts to develop biosensors in which the biological material consists of
cultured cells. Speakers will cover the uses cells derived from vertebrate, invertebrate and plant sources.

The promise of neural stem cells for the treatment of chronic neurological diseases is great. In order to
fulfill this promise, we need a better understanding of the inductive signals that guide neural differentiation
in a specific direction. The speakers in this mini-symposium will look at stem cell differentiation at both the
molecular and cellular levels. Hongjun Song will present mechanisms by which adult neural stem cells
choose a specific differentiation pathway. Shayne Boucher will present ways to measure multiple and rare
analytes with the differentiating cell, including transcription factors and signaling molecules. Mainak Das
will discuss axonal growth and remylination of an in vitro adult spinal cord model system.

Plant metabolic engineering holds the promise of creating crop plants capable of synthesizing important
nutrients, bioactive compounds, and novel polymers. A key factor for developing the sustainable
production of novel, health-promoting metabolites or useful polymers in crops is to characterize fully how
these compounds are produced. Biochemical and molecular genetic approaches have been used to
dissect the often complex pathways leading to the production of these natural products, however, much is
to be learned about the enzymes producing valuable metabolites, the mechanisms for their regulation,
and metabolic consequences for the crop plant producing these compounds.  This workshop will explore
how plant biochemistry and molecular genetic approaches are being applied toward the goals of
abundantly producing two polymers, one a plant-produced plastic and the other a food additive, and two
small molecules with established human health benefits.

Tissue engineering involves the cultivation of either differentiated or stem cells on biomaterial scaffolds in
bioreactors, toward biological substitutes of native tissues. Engineered tissue grafts are expected to meet
the growing clinical need for replacement tissues, and help address both the shortage of native tissue
grafts and the limitations of artificial devices. Engineered tissues of sufficiently high fidelity can also serve
as physiologically relevant models for fundamental research.  This session will first discuss the use of
tissue models in controlled in vitro studies as an alternative for animal experimentation. In the second
talk, the focus is on biophysical regulation of tissue formation in vitro, using engineered cartilage as a
representative and clinically significant example. In the third talk, focus is on stem cells as a source for
tissue engineering, and the behavior of stem cells in a three-dimensional setting.
